Jan Douglas – Academy past president and current member of the prestigious American of Teachers of Singing, past president of both New York Singing Teachers Association and his local chapter of The National Association of Teachers of Singing – is the complete voice professional. Throughout his career he has continued to develop mastery of a profession whose horizons are constantly expanding. Adding year by year to his skills, he has proven himself to be an exemplar of his profession, a distinguished teacher of singing.
Jan earned the Doctor of Music at Florida State University. His doctoral treatise was an early contribution to the developing literature on the acoustics of the vowel. He arrived in New York City to study and teach after serving his undergraduate alma mater as a professor of voice.
He has studied extensively in New York with two illustrious pedagogues, Cornelius Reid and Thomas LoMonaco. In both studios he acted as assistant and protégé and gained extensive teaching experience along the way. In New York City he has taught on the faculties of Teachers College Columbia University, Hunter College, New York University, Wagner College and William Paterson University. Today his focus is on teaching voice in all styles in his private studio, at The Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, and at Long Island University. Click here for full curriculum vitae.
Jan is loved by his friends and pupils, among the latter, those who have sung at the highest levels of opera and musical theater throughout the world and who confirm that no young or advanced student would be better served than by the character and experience of Jan Douglas.
